For years we’ve seen evidence that
girls are hitting puberty at earlier ages than previous generations, and now we’re
getting that same proof for boys. A new study in the journal Pediatrics shows
boys are now hitting puberty six months to two years earlier than in studies
that looked at previous decades. The numbers vary by race, with
African-American boys hitting puberty at just over nine years old and white and
Hispanic boys hitting puberty at a little over ten years old. Researchers do
not know why they’re seeing a change from previous studies, but there are all
sorts of theories from changes in our environments to higher rates of obesity.
I believe the change in both boys and girls may be due to chemicals and hormones
in our food and drink. Parents are feeding their children genetically modified
foods and milk that has added hormones in it. It is unlikely this altered food
has no consequence for those who eat it. In addition, children are also getting
BPAs in their foods from storage containers and packaging. Studies have linked
BPA to other health complications like obesity in children and cancer in lab
animals.
