Summer movies and NBA Finals advertising

I wonder if those who schedule advertising for the NBA Finals really have that low of an opinion of the viewers. Really, White House Down? As if the movie didn't look bad enough, but I've got to watch Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx "act out" an alternate, basketball-style scenario their characters might experience. Really? Do I want to see or can I handle another preview for This Is the End? Does my mental capacity need diminishing? I have seem more commercials for absurd movies during the Finals than I have seen any other memorable ads. As I type this, I recall a commercial for The Smurfs 2. I didn't think the first Smurf movie did that well. I guess it is easy and cheap to trade upon a mediocre success and a sub par "fan" following.

I probably shouldn't discount the box office power either White House Down or This Is the End will have. They will likely both do very well. You have the sexiest man alive power of Tatum in one and the obnoxious comedy stylings of Seth Rogan, et all in another. People will probably venture out to the theaters to see these movies. However, I stand my ground and my early predictions that neither movie is quality cinema. Neither movie will leave a viewer with any lasting impression and both will be very forgettable.

I digress to previous blog rants, where are the quality movies this year. I don't need a full hand of fingers to count the number of movie releases that have been worth my money. Usually by this time, there will have been a couple of critically acclaimed films released and a small number of movie fan favorites. Now, with the year half over and with a bleak movie outlook, I am worried. What do I have to look forward to? I spend much time in the second half of the year watching movies I feel might make great Oscar contenders, but this year I have nothing.
