Mapping odd accents and pronunciations
As a native Wisconsinite I am guilty of pronouncing words in weird ways, and that's on top of having what others might call an odd accent. I call it soda and drink from a bubbler for example. A researcher from North Carolina actually mapped these weirdities in a series of 22 pictorials that illustrate the regional differences of how we speak. The maps report data on what one calls a miniature lobster you find in a lake or stream, how people pronounce caramel, how to pronounce crayon, and more. The results are incredibly interesting, not that I didn't know I speak differently, but it is intriguing to look at the regional trends and isolated pockets of dialects. You can check out all of the maps by clicking on this link.
