I Don't Like Christmas Music, So Turn It Off!

For many people, their favorite thing about the approaching Christmas holiday is the music. However, I am not many or most people; I do not like Christmas music. In fact, I think it is rather creepy. I have never been a big fan of the holiday melodies. I think that's because on long car rides home from visiting relatives I wanted some variety from the songs we listened to on the way there. While working overnights at the news station a couple of years ago someone left a sad Christmas melody on in the basement. I cannot remember the song, but in my memory it was a Patsy Cline sort of crooning on repeat. That's right, it's as if someone put the needle on the record and it kept skipping back. Talk about creepy. The basement was bad enough without the sad, eerie music. It reminded me of the suicide scene in "Girl Interrupted." I don't think I went into the basement for a month or two afterward.
When I was younger, my favorite Christmas ditty was "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." Now my favorite is John Lennon's "Happy Christmas," which I see as very telling of my attitude toward the holiday.

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
                                                                  The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong

To me, this song emits a feeling of melancholy. It is basically saying, 'It's Christmas, so what? What does that mean?' It surely doesn't mean that the world's problems are over even though you take a one day break from thinking about them. I get so annoyed at the fake sense of happiness that is in the air during Christmas time and this song puts that in check. It is calling out to those people asking what they have done to make the world better.
