Movie review: Magic in the Moonlight

Directed by: Woody Allen
Starring: Colin Firth, Emma Stone

Rating: C+

Magic in the Moonlight is a charming, entertaining movie, and I found it agreeable enough. It is a tad formulaic, but contained the Woody Allen nuances that America cherishes. However, my affinity for the storyline fizzled by the end. I found myself rooting against both main charters. I didn't want either person to end up the predictable way they would. I didn't see it as a likely outcome. I don't agree with the idea that Stanley would fall for Sophie after her egregious deception. Furthermore, I don't think she should have entertained the idea of being with Stanley after he rejected her, let alone chase him across the French countryside. The fact that she did follow him from the Côte d'Azure to Provence is logistically unrealistic. At no point in the movie do we see her drive, nor do we know if she can. We also don't know if she actually has a car. So, how does she get there? This is a willing suspension of disbelief that I am not willing to make.

From talking to friends and reading reviews, I know other movie goers fell in love with Colin Firth's character. This regardless of how rude and cold his attitude, people regard him as a leading man. I just don't see it! They get swept up in the romance of the idea. They also get swept up in the aspects of a period piece, including glitzy costumes, well dressed sets, and exotic locales. Still, like I said the movie was charming. I'll consider the whole film and not pick it to bits destroying all entertainment value.
